Please note that amendments to the Federal Privacy Act will come into force this February 22. As an LCC member this affects you because you have access (through SU QLD) to your supporters’ confidential information.
What has been amended?
The latest amendment to the Privacy Act requires you to immediately report any suspected or actual ‘eligible’ data breach to SU QLD.
An eligible data breach may include losing your laptop or USB drive, which contains your supporters’ confidential information. It could include having your computer or email password compromised if that computer or email account has confidential information about your supporters.
What you need to do in the event of a known or suspected data breach?
If you know or believe there has been a potential data breach, it’s better to be safe than sorry – please contact SU QLD’s I.T department immediately and inform your Field Development Manager. The penalties for any breaches are severe – including a $360,000 fine for the individual responsible.
How can you protect yourself against data breaches?
You can better protect yourself against potential breaches by using strong, secure passwords, avoiding print outs, or by shredding printouts once you’ve finished using them. Most of all, be mindful of where you are saving information to and keeping that information secure. Our supporters entrust us with their privacy, let’s honour them by doing all we can to protect them from harm.
